yellow

byellowYellow ware was first introduced into the United States during the 1820s, with widescale production occurring in this country by the 1840s - 1850s.  The popularity of this refined, essentially utilitarian, ceramic (along with stoneware) was due in part to the ware's durability, in comparison to the more fragile, and typically earlier, redwares.  This specimen exhibits multiple slipped bands in brown, white, and blue.  Banding was the first decorative technique employed on yellow ware - appearing as white bands as early as the ca. 1840s.  By the 1850s, multi-colored banding was produced (Leibowitz 1985; Sussman 1997).
