Two common utilitarian wares of the 19th century were redware and stoneware. Redware, pictured on the left, was the most common utilitarian ware during the first half of the 19th century. However, by mid-century, it began to be replaced by more durable wares, such as this example of a cobalt blue decorated, salt-glazed stoneware. Note that the stoneware crock had a 1 1/2 gallon capacity. |
