thimble

bthimbleFlattened, brass thimble exhibiting punched knurling as well as the stamped sentiment "FRIENDSHIP" along the border (a faintly stamped floral motif also extends around the border).  Brass thimbles have been around at least since the 17th century; however, the incorporation of slogans or sentiments on the border of thimbles is largely a product of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.  This particular thimble is English in origin, probably dates to the mid-19th century, and is defined as a tailor's thimble.  Note that it does not appear to have been made with a crown (i.e., it was open at the top) and the knurling does not extend to the top of the object (Bertrand 2000, pers. comm.; Acchino 2000, pers. comm.; Crawford 2000;pers.comm).
