This iron piece attached to the end of a singletree or doubletree; "the pivoted swinging bar to which the traces of a harness are fastened and by which a vehicle or implement is drawn."  As you may suspect, a single tree was used for one animal, such as a horse or oxen; the doubletree was used to balance two animals.  Form and function of these trees changed little throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, as can be attested to by the 1902 illustration below of a singletree (Sears, Roebuck and Co. 1902).
