pipes

bpipesThe abundance of tobacco pipe fragments found on 18th and 19th century sites attests to the widespread use of tobacco by our ancestors.  The top two pipestems are parts of ball clay pipes; this type of pipe, with its long, fragile stem, was used from the 17th century into the 20th century.  The stoneware pipestem fragment on the bottom is from a reed pipe, which was used during the ca. 1820s – 1930s.  With this type of pipe, a hollow reed was inserted into the pipe before use; this disposable reed pipestem would be replaced periodically, leaving the stoneware bow 1 intact.
