Close window to return to Artifacts

This example of an Indian Head penny, dated 1864, was recovered from the Structure #1 area.  It is the only clearly dated artifact thus far recovered from the Reed Farmstead site.  Indian Head pennies were first minted in 1859, depicting an "Indian Princess" on the obverse, and an oak wreath on the reverse.  In 1860, the reverse was altered to include a shield and oak wreath combination.  Minting of the Indian Head penny ceased in 1909.(Yeoman, 1997)
