Heavily oxidized tumbler-style padlock exhibiting a wrought iron case and shackle as well as an ornate brass keyhole cover known as a drop or dust cover. The brass drop on this example is stamped "PATENT". The use of brass keyhole covers on iron padlocks did not become common until after ca. 1840 (Russel Erwin Manufacturing Company 1865; Noël Hume 1970: 251). |
