Ink bottles were first manufactured in the United States in 1816 and continued in use until the early 20th century. This particular example, a fragment from a conical-shaped bottle, displays the embossed letters "CA…" on the vessel shoulder - probably denoting the Carter Ink Company. This company began ca. 1858 and was known for the production of conical-shaped bottles. These bottles were common until ca. 1900 (Munsey 1970: 120-121; Polak 1994: 157; Wilson 1981). |
