Flat, or sad (i.e., meaning heavy or dense) irons, were common in American homes beginning around ca. 1850 and continued in use until the early 20th century (Walker and Walker 1999).  This specimen, exhibiting a sharp point as opposed to a rounded point, is missing its wrought handle (Russell and Erwin Manufacturing Company 1865: 380).
