Rim sherd from a large domestic gray salt-glazed stoneware crock exhibiting a freehand cobalt slip decoration in the form of a stylized flower. Freehand decoration on stoneware was popular into the third quarter of the 19th century. After that time, stenciled decoration and lettering became increasingly popular, especially in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia (Greer 1996: 166; Ketchum 1991: 6-7). |
