Two fragments from a carinated cup or bowl form displaying the Castle pattern (also known as Fort, Steamboat-on-the-Rocks, and New England). Dating from the early to mid-19th century, the pattern consists of a hand painted, stylized castle-like structure surrounded by hand painted trees. Tree foliage and landscape foliage is sponged; light blue sponging flanks the central motif (Robacker and Robacker 1978: 40;44). |
