blueplate

bBluplateFlow Blue-decorated wares began to appear by ca. 1825, but did not become popular until ca. 1835.  Use of this decorative technique, whereby the cobalt blue transfer print color is allowed to dissipate or "flow" into the glaze surrounding the image to produce a blurred effect (e.g., Copeland 1982: 4), continued as late as the early 20th century (Snyder 1994: 4).  This rim sherd probably derives from a 10-sided plate in the "Tonquin" pattern produced by Joseph Heath, Tunstall, England between 1845 and 1853 (Snyder 1994: 117).
